Where the dirt hides

The dirtiest places in a house are the ones you never see.

In Japan, families do ōsōji, a big clean at the end of the year: every corner, every drawer, every place nobody looks.

Grandma Haru wrote those places down. The slime under the drain cover. The black ring inside the washer seal. The filter at the bottom of the dishwasher that nobody told you about.

One secret per page: how to spot it, why it happens, what you need and the exact steps, with cheap things you already have. Check your own house

  • Water stands around your feet in the shower, and the drain smells a little like old eggs.

  • Pull back the rubber seal on your front-loader. Black spots. Grey sludge.

  • Dishes come out gritty, and the dishwasher smells.

  • Pink or orange slime in the shower corners, on the drain, or at the toilet water line.

  • Your clean towel smells sour the moment it gets wet.

  • Black gunk hiding in the folds of the rubber door seal.

  • A yellow-brown crust where the seat attaches to the bowl.

  • A little cloud over your bananas every time you walk past.

  • Black dirt and dead bugs in the track where the window slides.

Tick the signs you know. The fix for every one is in the notebook. Get all 30 fixes

One page, one secret

Secret one is the hair monster. You will know it when water stands around your feet in the shower and the drain smells a little like old eggs.

Lift the drain cover. Push a barbed plastic strip down as far as it goes, twist it, and pull it up slowly. Wrap the clog in paper towel and run hot water for a minute.

Once a month. No drain chemicals needed. Every page ends with one line from Haru, and this one is: plastic strip, push, twist, pull.

One month, every spot

The checklist at the back turns the secrets into a routine: one room a week. Tick a box when it is done, and next month start again.
